December 26 (Diary) The Privileges of Aging

Clear skies
The winter solstice has passed, and I savor the days getting a little longer.

When I take a walk in the morning, I often find myself mesmerized by the sight of trees with no name, their leaves glistening in the morning sun. How beautiful,” I thought.

I am sure that until a few years ago I would have passed by without seeing it. As I have written before, aging is not always a bad thing. It is not only that we become less sensitive as sense organs, such as being unable to see and hear, but also that our sensitivity is sharpened.

When I think about it, I feel that aging is not so bad. Just looking at a single tree makes me happy. In time, I may not need any external entertainment, and just looking at people passing by from the window, I can imagine this and that, and feel happy on my own.

So, I have come to somehow understand why old people often stare blankly into their yards and smile smugly. Of course, life, sickness, death, and aging are painful. It is natural.

However, we must find joy in aging. There is a part of me that becomes dull, and a part that is sharpened. It may be an interesting experience to improve our spirituality while identifying these parts.

It is said that the future is for the young and the past is for the old. However, I feel that it is the old who have the privilege of thoroughly enjoying the present.

I write poetry and novels that can be read by young children. Literature is the strongest.
