November 1 (Diary) Awakening to Nohgaku again after a lapse of time

Autumn rain makes me feel a little sad.

While reading the complete works of Hideo Kobayashi, the following sentence suddenly caught my attention.

I have always believed that the greatest and noblest monuments in the history of world theater are Chekhov’s plays and the Noh stage…. (Kunio Kishida, “Gekijo”)

There was a time long ago when I was interested in classical Noh plays, starting with Yukio Mishima’s “The Modern Noh Plays,” and I read books on Noh plays, but I found it impossible to follow them only in words, so I abandoned them before I knew it.

This one sentence inspired me to search for Nohgaku-related videos on YouTube. There were quite a few. After watching a few random ones, I simply thought they were good.
Regardless of the artistic value that Mr. Kishida mentions, I was more than moved by the worldview that transcends time and space with ease, and felt a deep sympathy.

This may have something to do with the fact that I have recently been thinking of trying my hand at tanka and haiku a little more deeply. Or perhaps I am simply getting older.

However, I think I finally understand why Yukio Mishima was fascinated by the mysterious world of Noh drama.

This will be useful for my novel. Somehow, I thought so. I’ll try to figure it out a little more.
