How to enjoy golf on a rainy day

Although playing a round on a rainy day can be depressing, there is also a good thing about it. The course is generally empty. Depending on the season, the course may be fully booked. This is especially common during the rainy season. Personally, I like playing a round at a brisk pace, so I think it’s much better to play in the middle of summer or winter, start very early in the morning, or have rain and have an empty course, than to have it crowded and have to wait a long time between holes. So, no matter how bad the weather, I can accept a fully booked golf course. However, playing golf on a rainy day. As you know, you can’t expect a good score. I’ve never heard of anyone who can handle the rain, especially when it comes to golf. In the first place, just wearing rainwear is a significant handicap. The ball doesn’t fly, and it doesn’t roll on the green. So, rather than lamenting golf on a rainy day and glaring at the sky, there’s nothing you can do once you’re at the golf course. You just have to find some fun.

Instead of complaining about the heavens, enjoy the rain.

There’s nothing else to do. Among all of these, I would especially recommend listening to the quiet sound of the rain hitting the course.

Looking back, unless it’s a typhoon or a really heavy rain, there are almost no opportunities to really listen to the sound of the rain. You can hardly hear it in a well-soundproofed house, and outside it gets drowned out by the sound of your umbrella and other noises.

However, there are actually many enthusiasts of the sound of rain, as can be seen from the fact that there are channels dedicated to the sound of rain on YouTube and smartphone apps (I’m an enthusiast). If you really try to listen carefully, you’ll find that it’s quite charming. At times, you might even find it more pleasant than music.

And if you listen for a long time, you’ll notice that the sound of the rain changes every minute.

While sitting in a golf cart on the course, absentmindedly waiting for your turn for the next hole or staring at your partner’s shot, take a moment to listen to the sound of the rain.

Then, the scenery that I had found annoying suddenly feels closer to me, and somehow my mood becomes calmer. I start to think that rain is necessary in this world (maybe that’s a bit of an exaggeration).

The sound of the rain also changes subtly depending on the location – the tee area, the fairway, the bunker, the rough, and on the green.

It’s quite fun to enjoy these differences. It’s even better if it inspires you with poetic ideas and allows you to write a tanka or haiku.

And when you sit in the middle of the fairway, with the rain falling silently, putting your umbrella down and taking your address, you can feel the rain with your whole body.

It reminds me of when I was an elementary school student and playing with the rain hitting me all over (maybe that’s a bit of an exaggeration too).

Feel the rain. Experience the essence of the rain. I feel like this is somehow useful for playing golf itself. For what? Well, I’m not sure what to do, though.

But even so, I’m still a lousy golfer who prays for clear skies the day before a golf game.
