November 22 (Diary) Lack of courage to take pictures of people

Sunny

The trip I was looking forward to has been cancelled. I was planning to take a lot of photos for my “Note”….

Lately, I’ve been getting a lot of people telling me that my photography is getting better. It used to be that bad. It was worse than that. But it is thanks to the improvement of iPhone’s performance.

I can now take pictures of landscapes as well as anyone else, but I can hardly take pictures of people at all. It’s all about people close to me. How do professional photographers take pictures of people in the city?
I can’t just take pictures without talking to them. Nor do I have the courage to talk to them. Even if all they have is an iPhone and not an SLR.

There are many books and articles on how to take pictures of people, but not many of them explain how to make this first contact.

I would like to take a picture of an old lady with a nice smile or a fishmonger who works in a shopping street that I visit on a whim, but how in the world do I do it? After all, I don’t know. In the end, I end up missing the perfect shutter chance.

But I somehow think that taking good portraits requires more than technique; it requires sociability and, above all, courage. And above all, you need courage.
Perhaps it is the same in the world of painting, poetry, and novels, which seemingly do not require such courage.
Especially “courage. I wonder if those are available anywhere.

Someday, in a nice European town.
“Just one picture.
I’d like to take a picture of a nice foreigner in a nice European cityscape.
Probably not possible.

I write poetry and novels that can be read by young children. Literature is the strongest.
